WHAT IS A SCARAB? |
|
Welcome to my Scarab project page. What is a Scarab, you ask?
A Scarab is a Volkswagen Beetle based 3-wheeled kit car produced in the 70's by FiberFab of Pennsylvania. As far
as I know, only 6 were ever made. They came about due to the gas crisis and the concern for better gas mileage.
The kit was intended for use with a motorcycle engine, rear wheel, and frame mounted to a VW Bug front end. |

History of my Scarab |
|
I purchased this kit in April 2002 over Ebay. It's previous home was
Trinidad, Colorado, though now it resides in Colorado Springs, CO. It came with a '74 Beetle
pan. The pan is in excellent shape, save for the front beam. It appears the donor car took a hit on the front left
leaving the beam bent. My plans for this car include varying the design by adapting the bug pan for use with the entire
car rather than chopping the rear of the pan off and attaching a motorcycle. This will involve shortening the pan, like
is done for a Manx, because the body is so short. To use all 4 wheels, I will have to cut out rear wheel wells and fabricate
fender flares and inner wells. I also want it to be powered by a VW aircooled motor for a superior power to weight ratio.
Though I don't plan on beginning work for a few months, please check back every so often for updates. |
